Our health is affected by a combination of many factors. Factors such as, where we live, our income, our level of education, genetics, our relationships with family and friends, our environment, access and use of health services all have a large impact on our lives as an individual and as a community. The determinants of health – things that make people healthy or not – include our social, physical and economic environments, and our personal characteristics and behaviours.
The Partnership wants to help improve and influence health determinants in East Belfast by tackling health inequalities, working in partnership, working towards equity in access to services and widening participation of community groups and local residents in tackling inequalities in health.
We have worked closely with key stakeholders involved in delivering local health services to develop a Health Strategy and Action Plan which is focused on addressing patterns of health inequalities in East Belfast, enabling local people to lead longer and healthier lives. This strategy enables us to connect to the key public health issues driving public expenditure while supporting health interventions on the ground via our partners in East Belfast Community Development Agency.
