Re-Imaging Newtownards Road |

Tuesday, 22 December 2009 |
As part of its ongoing tourism focus and in the run-up to 2012 - the centenary anniversary of the Titanic launch - East Belfast Partnership is currently developing a series of tourism and public art initiatives in East Belfast called the “Titanic People Project” that will utilise our historic image and celebrate our cultural heritage. The Partnership is currently securing resources to further develop the Titanic People Project to include an art piece and this to will be located on the Newtownards Road in the shadow of the mighty Samson and Goliath. This project will encourage Titanic themed tourism into wider East Belfast from Titanic Quarter, using our area’s industrial and social links with the Harland & Wolff shipyard to draw in the global interest in Titanic. Our vision is that this work will help transform this part of the Newtownards Road and create a more welcoming greeting for visitors at the gateway into East Belfast and the broader Titanic area. East Belfast Partnership is therefore calling for applications from experienced and suitably qualified artists/artist teams for the commission of an iconic piece of public art to celebrate our industrial heritage and create a visual focus for the Newtownards Road. This project is part-funded through the Re-Imaging Communities Programme, led by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland (ACNI). Connswater Community Greenway |
Thursday, 31 August 2006 |
1. Introduction and Aim
The Connswater Community Greenway is a proposal for the creation of a linear park through East Belfast, following the course of the Connswater River, connecting the open and green spaces and remediating the Connswater River itself. The Greenway will reconnect the communities of East Belfast and restore the Connswater River as a living community asset. It will create vibrant, attractive, safe and accessible parkland for leisure, recreation and community events and activities. It will provide immediate benefit to the 35,000 people living in the wards adjacent to the river. Specifically, the Connswater Community Greenway will directly improve the living environment, reinstating a valuable amenity for local people and provide opportunities for improving health and well being. The Project will act as a catalyst for physical and economic development and improve access and connections for local communities to open spaces. There are a number of open spaces along the course of the river which are underused because they are inaccessible, unsafe and unconnected to the communities in their hinterland. The people have turned their back on the river which is currently dirty and smelly and inhibits positive uses. This Project will deliver benefits from the Castlereagh Hills to Belfast Lough and beyond, turning a seriously underused, and at intervals, blight on the landscape into a community asset that will become an immediate living landmark. 2. VisionThe vision is to develop a safe, accessible, sustainable greenway which is an inspirational living landmark that improves the quality of life for the people of East Belfast, now and for future generations. 3. ObjectivesThe key objectives identified for the Connswater Community Greenway are to: Improve the access, safety and quality of green and open space in East Belfast for the people of this community, improving the living environment for present and future generations. Remediate the Connswater River and transform it into a community asset for East Belfast. Increase the pedestrian and cycle facilities and links in East Belfast and provide alternative and healthier transport options. Improve health and well-being through providing a better living environment and enhanced exercise and recreation opportunities, accessible by all. Provide vision, resources, hope and a sense of pride and identity for communities in East Belfast. Build and strengthen relationships between fragmented local communities. Develop connections and linkages between buildings, people and places in East Belfast. Provide space for walking trails, heritage trails, public art and in which wildlife can thrive. Realise the potential of the river as an educational asset for current and future generations.
4. OutcomesThe Outcomes of developing the Connswater Community Greenway for the people of East Belfast will be: A stronger, safer community. An improved urban environment. Healthier and more active people and communities. Better life chances. Better access to training and development.
5. Who will benefit? We are primarily improving the quality of life for the people of East Belfast now and for future generations. These include: 34,445 residents who live in the wards bordering the Connswater River. The pupils attending the 10 schools in the proximity of the river. Visitors and tourists to East Belfast / Belfast. Those who chose to work and invest in East Belfast. Future generations in East Belfast.
6. The Map7. Current positionThe estimated cost of the Connswater Community Greenway is £29m. The Partnership submitted an application to the Big Lottery for £22m and was shortlisted and awarded a development grant of £250k to develop the project through to submission of a stage two application by 31 May 2007. The Partnership will use the development fund to develop the project from concept to outline design by May 2007. For further information on the project, contact Wendy Langham

Inner East Neighbourhood Partnership Board |
Sunday, 29 January 2006 |
The Neighbourhood Partnership has submitted its Vision Statement to BRO. The Vision Statement sets out their aspirations for the Neighbourhood Renewal area, and identifies priority issues for improving the area. They are now in the early stages of putting together the action plan and are awaiting confirmation of technical assistance.
The priorities identified are; Education, Health, Income Deprivation and the Living Environment and these are based on the Noble indicators. A further priority of community cohesion has been highlighted as a cross-cutting challenge and the problems experienced in east Belfast in recent weeks have demonstrated just how fragile our communities are. The Neighbourhood Partnership is planning to seek technical assistance from BRO to help them develop their vision into a realistic action Plan. This will be developed over the coming months and there is an expectation that members of the Partnership Board will make a significant contribution to this. |

Baseline Statistics for East Belfast Now Available |
Tuesday, 27 September 2005 |
The most recent baseline statistics are now available to Partnership Board members in hopefully quite accessible form. We have two documents available: the updated Statement of Need for the whole of all of the 19 wards covered by EBP and more detailed information relating to the four inner east wards – Ballymacarrett, Woodstock, Island and The Mount. The Partnership are obtaining a permit to publish the documents from Ordinance Survey NI and these can then be put on the website for reference. |
