Newtownards Road 2012

The Newtownards Road was once a thriving area but shops and businesses have closed down over the years, leaving a number of vacant units, derelict buildings and sites.

The Newtownards Road 2012 (NRd2012) project has been actively seeking investment in the Road by promoting environmental improvement schemes with the support of DSD, Roads Service and Belfast City Council and initiatives such as LOTS (Living Over the Shops) which help owners by providing a grant to convert vacant or underused upper floors of shops and office buildings into apartments.

Funding support is currently being sought for a number of other new initiatives which we hope will build on the public realm improvement scheme pictured above. These are:

  • Shop frontage improvements
  • Facade improvements
  • Environmental improvements on vacant sites
  • Footpath upgrade on lower Newtownards Road

All the plans we are making will involve traders, local residents and community groups which will help ensure regeneration efforts are maintained.

The Newtownards Road Public Realm Improvement Scheme funded by DSD and DRD Roads Service has been completed.  It has made a really positive impact to the road and consists of sandstone paving, lighting, trees and a newly resurfaced road.
